James "Jim" Sansing Obituary

On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, James (Jim) William Sansing, husband and father of 2 daughters, completed his journey in this life at the age of 80.

Jim was born in Shelby, North Carolina, on July 15, 1942, to J.M. and Effie (Patterson) Sansing. He graduated Shelby High School in 1960 and was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist in his senior year. Jim married Linda Williams Sansing in 1960 and they had 2 daughters, Dana and Lea. He joined the U.S. Army in October, 1960, served 3 years active service and was honorably discharged October, 1963. In October, 1962, the Nike Hercules Guided Missile Unit in which Jim served, 2nd Missile Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery was alerted to move from its base at Ft. Bliss, Texas, to Homestead, Florida, to provide air defense for South Florida as reaction to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The 3 batteries (A, C, and D) deployed and lived in combat field conditions for more than a year before permanent facilities were built.

Jim joined Southern Bell of the Bell Telephone System in October of 1963 after his military discharge and worked there through the Bell System break-up and shake-ups for 31 years. He worked as an Installer/Repair and Switch Equipment Technician then accepted a promotion into management in 1980 where he served in several technical manager and staff function positions until he officially retired from the company in 1994 then served until 2004 as a telecommunications consultant to BellSouth when he retired completely.

Jim was a life-long musician and singer. He performed over the years in several different local bands in local venues to entertain and help make life more enjoyable for all through music. In later years, most of his musical talents were dedicated to giving hope and faith to others through his church choir. Jim always received great joy and satisfaction to be able to use his talents to entertain and inspire others. Growing up, he had developed an interest in flying and building model airplanes and was able to obtain a Private Pilot License and fly small airplanes for fun.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, J.M., and his mother, Effie.

He is survived by his wife of the home, Linda, daughter Dana and her husband Doug Guffey of Shelby, and daughter Lea Sansing of Shelby. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Nancy Hardin and husband Don, and Mary Ruth Andrews; 2 grandchildren, Adam Guffey, and Jordan Arrowood and husband Brian, along with 3 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and several loving cousins. He is also survived by special friends Chuck Bingham and wife Sherri of Sparta, NC, and Mike McSwain and wife Joy of Shelby.
