Wayne Safrit Obituary

SHELBY - Notorious and well known to friends and family in Westminster Maryland, Wayne Safrit, 69,  said his last goodbye Monday morning, September 16th around 1:15 a.m. while convalescing in his niece’s home in Shelby, North Carolina.  Loved by many, misunderstood by as many, Wayne lived a full life without any filters.  He did what he wanted to do as a bachelor all his life.  From a Carney in Ocean City, Maryland for two years to a sailor on the Pride of Baltimore.  The list of occupations was long and varied.  Brick layer, journeyman electrician represented by Baltimore local 24, ski instructor and avid hunter of big game.  A traveler, skiing in Europe, Germany and Switzerland.  At nineteen, hitch-hiking crisscrossed America,  Wayne lived in California, Washington State, Utah, Jackson Hole Wyoming, Baltimore, Cape May Point N.J., Westminster MD, Westminster England and on board the most prestigious clipper “The Pride of Baltimore”.  He tried his skills at sky diving, deep sea diving. Numerous motorcycle tri-state trips, a unique journey to “Sturges” in 2004 with his brother Johnny.  Cross country racer in High School.  Wayne was an excellent skier and became a sought-after instructor.  Toward the end of his exciting and varied life, he sought his license to teach big game hunting and accurate shooting techniques.

From marching for Martin Luther King in Washington, DC, he witnessed the great speech of his day at the reflection pool and was found later in a nearby bar, lending elbows in honor of Dr. King.

Left to cherish his memory is his brother John Safrit; his beloved confidant Laura and husband Dominic; nephew Adam, wife Jessica and children Maddy and Austin; niece Kristin, husband Troy and children Clay, Camryn and Clay.  He will be deeply missed by his three cats; Snowflake, Snowball and Rebel, who were his constant companion.   Wayne has countless nieces and nephews, a world of friends and long-lost lovers.  He was one of a kind and we were all grateful for his unique character and years of unbelievable stories.
