I was blessed to have known Erv (as we all in the neighborhood knew him) for the last 3 years of his long and eventful life. He often remarked that his life in our neighborhood filled him with complete happiness and satisfaction. So I feel sure that we saw Erv as he really was: an intelligent and inquiring mind, a friendly and gregarious neighbor, and overall a great spirit whose care and concern for his neighbors were always evident.

We spent many pleasant hours chatting with Erv under our shade trees watching our dogs run through our yards, sharing a drink with one another, trying to get a jump on each other’s wit. I rarely succeeded with Erv. He was just too sharp.

Erv’s repertoire of experiences and observations on his all-too-short driving career constituted a complete lesson in the trucking industry. We learned things that we had never imagined about trucks, drivers, transportation companies, and especially the American road with all the challenges, opportunities, and risks it presented. Erv was a detailed and thrilling narrator of adventures on the road from his earliest days in the American military in Europe through his driving that helped build modern post-war America until his last drives fighting off disability as a local trucker. As such, we know that Erv was an invaluable father, mentor, and faithful friend for his beloved step-son, Gene, who follows in his footsteps today.

Erv suffered a serious disability for most of his adult life, but it never stopped him until pain and immobility became an overbearing reality. Throughout this time, Erv showed courage, determination, and true concern for others before himself. It was Erv’s “true grit” that allowed him to continue long beyond where lesser men would have stopped.

Erv’s dedication to, and love for, his devoted wife, Pauline, was obvious to all. Their marriage was clearly one of consuming devotion of each to the other. They were and are an example to all of us. I count it a blessing--unlooked for, unexpected, and undeserved--to have known “Erv” Lasecki and to have been counted among his final friends. RIP, Erv.

Cousin Erv was a truly positive force of nature and was loved by us all. We will miss his strength of character and unassuming flair for life.

All our love to Pauline and family.
